Adults With Intellectual Disabilities And Their Challenges

By Carl Cox

There are many folk who struggle in a number of different ways. Adults with intellectual disabilities may find that this is an ongoing struggle in their lives. Of course, this will depend on the severity to which they are affected. Some people are able to work and have families, and others may need more attention.

Of course, one needs to make sure that these adults are given the opportunity to make their own choices and given some independence. In the past many people were just sent to a home where they were taken care of someone. This meant that they always had to rely on someone else which really took away their independence.

Folks like this can even go on to study and get a good job. This is not unheard of. Of course, it will depend on how badly affected someone is. There are people who are able to have a desk job. There are freelancers who do very well working for home at their computer. There are also people who prepare fast food, for example.

One should encourage this because it will do a lot for the person, mentally and emotionally. You have to know that you have certain goals to reach and that you are doing various things in life. If this is not possible, one should volunteer. It is important to be doing something worthwhile. There are always grants available to support yourself.

They will most probably need to see a psychologist from time to time because it can be damaging at certain times of their lives. Children like this will often get bullied and picked on. This will leave scars. They need to continue with therapy to make sure that they stay motivated and encouraged. A therapist will be able to deal with them on a practical level as well.

There are a number of different jobs that people can do as well as fields of study which they can go into. It is important to talk to a career counselor who is specialized in this area. They may also have contacts in the field to help them get a start in life. Of course, it is not always easy to simply fall into a job because of the situation, but there are many people like this who are working.

Socially, it can be difficult to adapt with certain skills, depending on what you are doing and how badly you have been affected. Family members usually know how to talk to someone who has been affected with this type of disability. They need patience. They need to be listened to and they need to be loved like anyone else.

Of course, it can be difficult for someone to cope outside of the home when they decide to move out and this is what they have to work towards. There are practical issues that one must work on which comes naturally for the average person. However to remember to brush your teeth and take a shower is not always easy for someone who has a disability like this. They should be guided about the basics in life so that they will be more confident.
